Optical Master Unit
FEATURES/ADVANTAGES
The Optical Master Unit (OMU) is used to supply fiber optic-powered RF amplifiers. The OMU converts the RF signals into optical signals. In most cases, the OMU is connected to a base station or a repeater. Part of the RF signal is decoupled via a coupler and fed to the OMU. In larger systems with several services, operators or sectors, a passive coupler system (POI) can be interposed to enable flexible distribution of the input signals to the output sectors.
In the downlink signal direction (from the base station to the cell phone), the signal from the BTS is fed to the OMU. The OMU converts the RF signal into optical signals and transmits these via the optical fiber to the connected repeaters. In the uplink direction (from the cell phone to the base station), the OMU receives the signals from the repeaters via the optical fiber, converts them into RF signals and feeds them to the base station.
SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
The optical master unit (OMU) consists of individual modular subracks.
Each subrack of an OMU has 12 slots and can be equipped with up to 8 optical modules as well as the Rack Communication Board (RCB), optional modem card and up to 2 power supply units.
AUTOMATIC LEVELING
The fiber optic system is characterized by its focus on user-friendliness, simple installation and commissioning. An automated process ensures that optical link compensation is carried out automatically. This simplifies commissioning and minimizes service times. Training requirements for service personnel are reduced.
REMOTE MONITORING
With a modem, it is possible to communicate with an OMU and its powered fiber optic repeaters. The following modem types and communication interfaces are available: GSM modem and TCP/IP (Ethernet). These are located in the OMU. The system can be controlled and monitored using the Axell Wireless Element Manager (AEM) software. All communication (RF signals and monitoring/control signals) between the optical master unit (OMU) and the supplied fiber optically powered repeaters is implemented via the same optical fiber. This results in very reliable monitoring of the communication link.
The OMU II supports the following standards or frequency bands: VHF, UHF, TETRA, TETRAPOL, GSM-R, UMTS, GSM, LTE in all common bands and is always used in combination with one or more BSF or MBF repeaters.
